ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY
There are no prerequisites for this course; however, you will need to be able to carry a heavy pack while navigating challenging terrain. We will teach you everything you need to know about backpacking and backcountry living.
Skill Level
Intermediate
Physical Ability
  • Carry a backpack weighing 45-50 lbs, hiking 2-7 miles a day with elevations changes of up to 1000 ft
  • Hiking in and out of the Escalante River through water typically calf-deep
  • Long days, often up at 6am and in bed at 9pm

When you enroll, we will provide you with a training plan to help prepare you for your course.

Arrival
The afternoon will start with introductions and an orientation time. You'll then be issued gear and will learn how to pack your bag. Dinner will be provided. You may sleep at the SROM building that night or book a local accommodation. If you do book a local accommodation, we will not be able to provide rides to and from that night and the next morning. You will leave early the next morning and drive ~ 9 hours to the trailhead.
On the Trip

Backpack through the awe inspiring Wind River Range. There you will encounter towering granite peaks, tread the rugged trails, observe unique alpine ecosystems, and be awestruck by starlit skies in some of the finest wilderness areas in North America.

We will teach you the skills to live in the wilderness, such as campsite selection, navigation, backcountry cooking, and going to the bathroom in the outdoors!

Your instructors will also model for you what it looks like to lead the group, and then you will get the chance to be a leader one day as well.

Each day will have a spiritual theme with family time in the evenings that often includes a devotional, discussion, and worship.
