Finding God in the Wilderness
When Life Feels Overwhelming
Ever feel like you’re drowning in the noise? Like you can’t catch your breath between notifications, meetings, and the endless demands pulling at you from every direction?
We get it. We all do.
There’s something inside us that’s crying out for more. For quiet. For space. For God.
And here’s what we’ve discovered after years in wilderness ministry: God is waiting for you in the wild places. Not just waiting . . . He’s calling you there. [Biblical Wilderness Ministry]
Creation Belongs to Everyone (Yes, Even You)
“We cannot care for God if we do not care for His Creation.” – Richard Louv
This hits us right in the heart every time we read it. Because it’s true, isn’t it? How can we love God and ignore the very canvas He painted to show us His glory?
But here’s what breaks our hearts, somewhere along the way, we’ve let wilderness become elitist. Like only certain people “deserve” to be in God’s creation. Like you have to follow all the right rules or have the perfect gear or know all the secret outdoor codes.
That’s garbage.
Jesus didn’t shame people. He invited them. He said “Come as you are” and then walked alongside them to teach them a better way.
The wilderness belongs to everyone seeking God. Period. Not just the outdoor elite. Not just the rule-followers. Everyone.
People find Jesus through God’s creation. Romans 1:20 tells us God’s invisible qualities are clearly seen in what He made. The mountains declare His majesty. The rivers sing His faithfulness. The stars proclaim His infinite love. We are made from the dust of the earth and intrinsically have a connection to creation.
God Has Always Met People in Wild Places
Think about it. Really think about it.
Moses was tending sheep in the middle of nowhere when God showed up in a burning bush. Elijah was hiding in a cave on a mountain when he heard God’s whisper. Jesus started His ministry after 40 days alone in the desert. [Biblical Examples of Wilderness Transformation]
This isn’t a coincidence. There’s something about wild places that strips away everything fake and leaves us raw and real before God. This is why God has always met people in the wilderness.
When was the last time you were truly alone with Him? No phone. No agenda. Just you and the God who made you?
Why Your Heart Comes Alive in the Wilderness
Modern life is suffocating us. We’re drowning in notifications, buried under expectations, constantly performing for people who don’t even know our real names.
But step into the wilderness, and something shifts.
The silence isn’t empty; It’s full of God’s presence. The challenges aren’t obstacles, they’re invitations to trust Him deeper. The beauty isn’t just pretty, it’s a love letter written specifically for your soul. [God is Waiting for You in the Wild Places]
At SROM, we believe that the wilderness is more relevant than ever. Our programs are designed to help participants step away from the ordinary, embrace adventure, and encounter God in ways that transform every area of life.
A Story That Will Change How You See Transformation
Let us tell you about Seth, a young man from Ontario, Canada, who joined our 40-day wilderness program. He arrived seeking adventure but found something he never expected, a completely transformed relationship with God.
During those 40 days in the wilderness, away from every distraction and comfort, Seth encountered God in ways he never had before. The experience was so profound that he was baptized on the trip, declaring his faith in the same wild places where God had been speaking to him.
But the transformation didn’t end there. That wilderness experience clarified his calling. Seth returned home knowing he was meant to be a firefighter, specifically fighting wild land fires. Today, he’s serving as a firefighter in Alberta, protecting the very wilderness that transformed his life.
Years later, Seth still reflects on that 40-day journey, especially when facing challenges. The wilderness taught him to depend on God, to hear His voice clearly, and to trust His calling completely. [ Alumni Stories]
That’s the power of wilderness transformation. It doesn’t just change a moment. It changes a life.
When You Finally Surrender
There’s a moment on every wilderness journey when you reach your breaking point. Your legs are screaming, your lungs are burning, and you don’t think you can take another step. This is the moment everything changes. [
Isaiah 40:31 becomes real: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
We love what one of our participants said: “I thought I needed to be strong enough for God to use me. But the wilderness taught me that God’s strength is made perfect in my weakness. When I finally stopped trying so hard and started trusting so deeply, everything changed.”
The Moment Everything Shifts
We’ve seen this transformation happen over and over. A participant will be struggling through their third or fourth day, feeling overwhelmed by both the physical challenges and the deeper questions surfacing in their heart.
Then something clicks. Maybe it’s during a sunrise that takes their breath away. Maybe it’s in a quiet moment by a stream. Maybe it’s while helping a teammate through a difficult section of trail. [The View from the Top Changes Everything]
Suddenly, they’re not just hiking anymore; They’re walking with God. The trail becomes a conversation. The challenge becomes communion. The wilderness becomes a sanctuary where His voice is finally clear.
“I’d been so busy talking at God that I’d forgotten how to listen to Him,” one participant shared. “The wilderness taught me to be quiet enough to hear His whispers again.”
Your Wilderness is Calling
So here’s our question for you: What’s keeping you from taking that first step?
Fear? Being busy? The lie that you’re not outdoorsy enough or spiritual enough or ready enough?
God doesn’t care about any of that. He cares about your heart. And if your heart is hungry for more of Him, the wilderness is waiting.
It doesn’t have to be a month-long expedition. Start with a day hike. A weekend camping trip. A sunrise on your back porch without your phone.
Just take one step toward Him in His creation and watch what happens. Discover how each step can become a conversation with God. [When Every Step Becomes a Prayer]
The wilderness isn’t just calling, God is calling. Through the mountains and rivers and starry skies. Through the challenge and the beauty and the silence that makes space for His voice.
Are you ready to answer?
Your story of transformation is waiting to be written. All it takes is one step.
