ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY
There are no prerequisites for this course except a desire to learn and grow. We will teach you the skills of backpacking, including the essential backcountry skills of gourmet cooking and using the bathroom in the wilderness.
Skill Level
Beginner
Physical Ability
On the backpacking section, you’ll carry a backpack weighing 40-60% of your body weight, hiking 4-8 miles a day at elevations of 8,000 ft. and above. Days can be long, often starting at 6am and ending at 9pm. While the physical challenge may feel overwhelming, most people can train and do great. We provide a training plan to help you prepare, so you’ll be ready to succeed and make the most of your adventure.
Arrival
You will meet your leaders and team at SROM headquarters in Laramie, WY. The afternoon will start with introductions and an orientation time. You’ll then be issued gear and will learn how to pack your bag. Dinner will be provided. You will sleep at the SROM building that night and head out early the next morning with your team to drive to the trailhead.
On the Trip

From SROM headquarters, you will head out to the Wind River Range. There, you’ll encounter towering peaks, stunning alpine lakes and streams, meadows of wildflowers, and breathtaking starlit skies in some of North America’s finest wilderness areas. We’ll teach you the technical outdoor skills needed to thrive in the mountains, including campsite selection, route finding, and navigation.

During this section, you’ll also have an extended time to reflect and spend time alone with God during a solo experience. The lessons will build upon each other, culminating in a final peak attempt to test your skills and growth.
