Instructor Positions

Back to main employment page

SROM instructors are talented and inspiring people who both minister and teach each student on a SROM course. Our staff is the backbone of SROM. Many youth pastors and individuals come back year after year because of the quality and love of the SROM staff. The relationships between our staff and others are the basis of our reputation. Consequently, SROM is always looking for individuals dedicated to the glory of God and Christ’s Kingdom, enthusiastic about youth and young adults, and willing to grow in servant leadership.

Working for SROM means hard work and long days, especially in the field. Days off do not regularly occur. Wilderness ministry requires individuals to have a deep and intimate walk with Jesus Christ and the desire to serve under all sorts of conditions. Those that choose to serve with SROM will experience both intense learning and genuine camaraderie with other staff. We ask and expect much from our instructors, but we believe the rewards are worth it. SROM invests a great deal of time and effort into training, developing, and mentoring our field instructors.

Job Descriptions

There are two ways to pursue instructing with SROM. Through the Field Instructor position, instructors are hired on a contract basis per course. Instructors may work one or more contracts per season. Read the job description below. The Instructor/Logistics Assistant position runs from approximately June 15 to August 15 each year and is a hybrid between instructing in the field and supporting the ministry at the SROM base. This position gives the employee a holistic view of wilderness ministry, and is ideal for newer instructors. Read the job description below. The application deadline for the Instructor/Logistics Assistant position is February 1st. However, applications are accepted on a rolling basis; we will hire as soon as we have qualified applicants.

Instructor Qualifications

Pay and Housing

Field Instructor

SROM will provide housing for course prep and course closure dates in addition to your salary. Your total pay will be based upon your SROM Rubric evaluation. This in-house program evaluates staff based upon a multitude of criteria to give each person a comprehensive look at his or her strengths and weaknesses. Your contract is based upon all of these factors. Your SROM Rubric is calculated upon completion of the WMPC (and Rock Instructor I). All instructors have the option to raise support in addition to their contracted salary.

Instructor/Logistics Assistant

SROM will provide housing for the duration of your employment. You will be paid a monthly rate regardless of time spent in the field versus time spent at the SROM base doing logistics support. See the job description for further details.

Time Commitment

Instructors work on a per-course contract basis, though there may be the potential to pick up multiple contracts within a summer. All instructor employment contracts are dependent on available courses and employee availability.

You will spend up to 40+ days in the field at a time, working 12-14 hours a day. At SROM headquarters you will work up to eight and ten hour days. Depending on our course schedule, you will work 40-80 hours per week. When you are at headquarters, SROM will work for you to have weekends off, but this is not always feasible. Working with SROM must be your only commitment within your contract dates.
